Working for public service-oriented institutions is probably one of the least explored options that fresh graduates think of in order to pay for the student debt they owe. Most of these students thought that they would be better off working for a private corporation even if the entry-level positions they usually end up with pays a very small salary.
Public-interest work may generally offer lower compensation compared to private companies. However, what most of these students fail to consider is that these public-interest jobs offer many student debt repayment plan in order to recruit high quality employees. These offers are usually packaged in a two-year employment contract and you must formally apply. Institutions that offer these student loan-repayment plans include AmeriCorps, Peace Corps and Teach for America.
The only catch to these programs is that you should be willing to relocate. But if you have no family to think of, working for these institutions can actually be enjoyable. Of course, the more important consideration is the low interest rates they have and sometimes you are even allowed to defer payments. These institutions also award taxable grant as much as 15% of your student debt for each year you work for them.
If your chosen career is in the health care industry, institutions like the National Health Service Corps offer student loan-repayment assistance to qualified health care professionals in exchange for their services. An amount of almost $50,000 can be approved under a two-year contract for doctors, nurses and others. For nurses, there is the Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program that could help them erase almost 60% of their student debt. Today, because of the shortage of medical staff particularly the nurses, private hospitals have started offering student loan-repayment programs to recruit skilled employees.
Other institutions that could provide assistance and you could explore include the Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago (lawyers), Department of Education (teachers), Department of State, Department of Justice and also the Securities and Exchange Commission. These institutions can offer student loan-repayment plans with an amount as much as $10,000 per year of service, up to a maximum of $60,000.
If you for work at the Army National Guard and qualify for their debt-repayment program; as much as $20,000 of your student loan debt can be forgiven. All these are considered incentives so highly skilled workers are retained. As they say, student debt-free workers are indeed happy workers.
